PIZZA PLACE ACROSS FROM GRAND BALLROOM - Pepperoni Slice With Anchovies
I need to start taking notes or something because my memory has been failing me lately. I can not for the life of me remember the name of the place where I got this slice of pizza.
I was already full from Mrs. Balderas’ feast, but I had some friends in town that I wanted to catch up with. My buddy Tim from Mesa Boogie came by to hang out and he’d suggested this pizza place to me a couple weeks ago. He wanted me to check it out because they make their pizza with a sourdough crust. The group decided on a pepperoni pizza. While we all looked on in horror Mark, Haste The Day’s tour manager, ordered a side of anchovies.
I remember an experience from my childhood where I saw an episode of Inspector Gadget and he was eating pizza with anchovies. I must have thought that “anchovies” was a funny word and it stuck in my head, so the next time my dad took me to get pizza I tried to order it with anchovies. He knew that I wouldn’t like it so he tried to advise me against this, but being a stubborn kid, I kicked and screamed until he gave in. He said something along the lines of “ok, you’re not going to listen to me so have it your way, but just know that when you decide within your first bite that you don’t like this, I’m not going to buy you more”.
Needless to say, he was right. I hated it. It made me want to throw up immediately. I’m not sure if I learned an important lesson that day or not, but it scared me away from anchovies until right about now.
Realizing that I was no longer five years old, I asked Mark if I could try one of his anchovies. As I bit into one, I realized that it wasn’t so bad after all. It wasn’t fresh, and it had probably had been hanging around in a vat for a year or so, but it still had decent flavor. The flavor wasn’t that unfamiliar either - salty, brined and surprisingly not as fishy as I had expected.
Mark was right. Anchovies and pepperoni worked nicely together on a pizza. It was definitely on the salty side, but I would try that again for sure.
I even liked the sourdough crust on the pizza. It was softer than I had expected, but it didn’t get soggy under the sauce. It had a mildly sweeter flavor than east coast pizza, but if I got this in New York or New Jersey, I wouldn’t have thought it out of place.
