AUTOMATIC SLIM’S - CRAWFISH EGGS BENEDICT
We were lucky to be in this area of Memphis. The club we played was right off Beale Street which is the main tourist drag in town. It afforded a variety of restaurants (mostly barbecue joints), blues clubs, bars, and tourist attractions. Since it was noon when I woke up, and barbecue was the last thing on my mind, I had a hard time finding an appropriate meal.
My girlfriend and I walked around a bit and debated a few different choices. We saw mainly pubs that offered standard bar fare like chicken sandwiches, burgers, salads. We also saw a greasy hole in the wall that serves eggs, grits, biscuits, and bacon which got us both a little excited, but since we couldn’t see inside the window which was caked with grease, we kept walking. Both of these options were a bit off the mark and just as we were about to give up and walk into a bar that serves 50 or so different beers on tap, we saw a sign for Cafe 51. We imagined a clean diner with pancakes, eggs, and toast. A nice, simple breakfast.
As we got to the sign, we noticed that Cafe 51 was definitely out of business, and had been for quite some time. We were about to call off our search for food and just go to Starbucks for a coffee when we saw the sign for Automatic Slim’s. We had found brunch!
I was torn on what to order. I knew I wanted eggs benedict of some kind, and this menu offered a few different varieties. I eventually chose the crawfish eggs benedict, since I have never had crawfish before. They really piled on the crawfish too. It was more rich than I had imagined, although that may be due to the fact that the cook definitely had a heavy hand with butter. My english muffin was soaked in it! Not that I’m complaining…
I also had nothing to complain about as far as the drinks were concerned. Automatic Slim’s offers $2.50 bloody mary’s and mimosas. The bloody mary was spicy but not to the point where it burned my mouth. There was no celery in it though, which bummed me out. I really enjoy the flavor-soaked celery and it was surely missed. The mimosa wasn’t so bad either.
This was a real treat. My girlfriend and I always talk about getting brunch at home and never do, so the fact that we happened to stumble into a great brunch in an unfamiliar city was a bonus. I just wish I had brought my camera with me, but I totally blew it and had to use my phone camera for this picture.
