SUN SONG A VIETNAMESE BISTRO - BEEF PHO
Dylan from Hollywood Undead has been telling me about Pho for this whole tour. He loves this stuff. There have been 3 other times when we were supposed to go get some and weren’t able to, for whatever reason. There happened to be a nice looking Vietnamese restaurant down the block from the club in Kansas City, so we finally made it happen.
I opted for the beef, medium done-ness, but I don’t recall the actual name of the dish (rather bowl) on the menu. Before the Pho came out, our server brought us a plate of garnishes including cilantro, Thai basil, sprouts and limes. Since I didn’t really know what to expect from this experience, all of the garnishes would later come into play. Dylan suggested using all of them as well.
The hardest part of this particular entry was taking the picture and making it look attractive. The first few pics looked like a mound of dog food in dirty bathwater. Appearances aside, I was still excited about this meal. It smelled great, and my first sip of broth was very promising. I added some sriracha and hoisin sauce, for heat and sweetness. I threw a couple shredded leaves of basil and cilantro in there for some aromatics. Then I decided to dive all the way in.
The somewhat unappetizing looking beef was more tender than it looked. I had a few great bites of it before it was all gone. The rice noodles were nice too but I had wished that they retained more of the broth flavor. After I had cleared the bowl of the noodles and beef, I was incredibly full, which is a shame because I didn’t get to enjoy too much of the broth.
This is a meal I’ll have to try again. I enjoyed it to a degree, but don’t know enough about it to have a strong opinion. Was it delicious? Yes. Did I enjoy the flavor combinations? Yes. Is there better Pho out there? Definitely.
