ACAPULCO - BEAN BURRITO, CHEESE ENCHILADA
I should have known to stay away from a Mexican restaurant in Minnesota. I could have walked an extra .3 miles and gotten food from a regional chain that I had once and really enjoyed. But, I humored my friend and wound up at this dump.
The guacamole had been made in a blender or bought from a store. The chips were straight up Tostitos, and the salsa was sweet yet acidic. These all should have been red flags and I should have walked out before I ordered my meal, but I went for it anyway. I ordered a combo platter with a bean burrito and a cheese enchilada. I was not about to take any chances with the meat here.
The enchilada came out with a brown gravy on it. The cheese was bland and almost made me gag because it tasted like government cheese. Also, it had cooled off a bit so the cheese was becoming coagulated. And really, brown gravy? it looked like someone shook off a pot roast onto my food. The bean burrito wasn’t quite as bad, but the red sauce on it resembled and tasted more like an Italian marinara sauce than anything Mexican. It, like the salsa, was sweet and weird.
This whole meal was very off-putting. The only positive thing about it was that the beans were really good. I ended up making bean tacos with Harris’s leftover fajita shells. Given all the options on the menu again, this is what I would have ordered - a plate of beans and 3 or 4 tortillas.
